The Hidden South Coast Cove You Probably Drove Past

The Hidden South Coast Cove You Probably Drove Past

So, you have been up and down the South Coast of NSW numerous times. Surfed the beaches. Fished the lakes. Ever feel like you missed a spot?

Possibly the best thing about the South Coast is there are endless coastlines to explore.

If you have a weekend up your sleeve and looking for an epic beach for yourself, you need to head to Bermagui. It’s a 5-hour drive from Sydney, and you will want to leave plenty of time if you’re going to find a hidden cove to spend the night.

Most visitors in the area drive out of Bermagui on the south end towards Tathra. It’s what’s on this stretch – beaches, cliffs, coves, that’s overlooked and unexplored.

If you’re willing to keep track of tides, have a kayak or up for a decent rock scramble, you’ll find the secret coves. Don’t forget your dive mask or spear gun either. This area is filled with crystal waters and if you’re skilled enough, you’ll be eating lobster for dinner.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Got what it takes? Leave the town of Bermagui behind and drive south. As you leave town, roughly 500m up the road, search for the first lookout on your left. Park your car here. To satisfy your curiosity, make your way from the lookout down the steep tracks and over the rocks. You need to wear shoes as the rocks will cut your feet.

From here, it’s up to you to discover what’s in each cove. If you’re sleeping overnight on the beach be cautious of tidal changes. You may end up with no beach to sleep and the cliffs are too steep to climb.

As always, you must respect the environment and Leave No Trace. If you have a fire, clear away your mess. Take rubbish with you. Bermagui is beautiful and we want to leave it that way.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Shoes
  • Swimmers
  • Towel
  • Sleeping gear if you’re staying overnight
  • Picnic
  • Diving gear
  • Warm clothing (it gets chilly at night down south)

TIPS:

  • Be careful of tidal changes
  • Make sure you lock your car. It’s been known in the area for break-ins.
