Women's Great North Walk Overnight Hike // 4th - 5th May

Our Larger Trips

Summary

We did it!

Need a weekend away? Our Women’s Great North Walk Overnight Hike will help make it happen.

If you find yourself lost for what to do on a weekend (or really need that hassle-free time for yourself), look no further. This overnight hike is one women love, and for good reason.

The Great North Walk runs from Sydney to Newcastle (we’re not doing the whole thing, phew!) It's 250 kilometres long, running from Macquarie Place in Sydney to Queens Wharf Tower in Bicentennial Park in Newcastle. This trip takes us from Hornsby to Berowra station (the really nice bit), a total distance of 16 km.

But be quick, spots fill up fast for this one and we wouldn’t want you to miss out.

Details

This overnight hike follows the Great North Walk from Hornsby to Berowra Station, staying at the waterside Crosslands Reserve. Along the way, you'll pass sandstone cliffs, creeks, and eucalyptus trees.

We'll cross bridges and waterfalls on the first day as we make our way to Tunks Ridge rest area for a cuppa. After passing over Berowra Creek, we follow the stunning trail riverside until we reach Crosslands Reserve, complete with toilets. As your guide prepares evening delights and dinner, you can kick back and relax or explore the reserve.

Upon waking up on day two, you'll hear birds and fish jumping, and smell coffee! After a hot cup of coffee and breakfast, the group heads out past the stunning mangrove estuaries. As we climb steeply and steadily, we reach the lookout to admire the 3.8km journey we just completed. You'll find a nice platform at the top of the hill, so take a moment to snap pictures and enjoy the view. After that, it's back to the open fire trail for 3 km to Berowra Station for the train ride back to Hornsby. At Hornsby, we'll grab a cuppa (if you'd like), then walk 10 minutes back to our cars.

Grading

Grading: Moderate

Prepare for this journey and boost your confidence through training for this Moderate to Challenging trip.

Good physical condition is key, even though prior overnight hiking experience is not required. The hike involves stairs, uneven surfaces, and rocks, making for a long day, particularly on the first day. It is well-suited for women in excellent health who are regular walkers or generally active. On day two, be prepared for a challenging 2 km stretch with many stairs and steep inclines. Regular exercise can significantly ease this challenge. Many participants have successfully completed this trip without prior overnight hiking experience, largely thanks to their solid foundation in walking fitness. Keep in mind, carrying a weighted pack is a new experience that can affect your hike. We pace ourselves, walking slower and taking breaks. If you have any doubts about your fitness level for this trip, please don't hesitate to contact our team.

Brilliant time! Thanks team!!! 👭🌿

I went on this hike with a group of friends and it was an unforgettable experience. The scenery was stunning and the guide was friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time exploring Crosslands Reserve in the evening and waking up to the sound of the birds in the morning. The climb to the lookout was challenging but the view was worth it. I would definitely recommend this hike to anyone looking for a fun and rewarding outdoor adventure.
